From the little village of Cucuron in Provence, I share the marinated salmon rose recipe from my cooking class with Chef Eric Sapet at La Petite Maison de Cucuron.

In late April, Thailand is already near 90 degrees F, and 85% humidity, but that didn't surprise my husband, John and I. What surprised us, was how great the food was, friendly people, and amazing natural beauty of beaches, bays, and surrounding islands.

I took a couple of Thai Cooking Classes, and ventured to their food markets--not for the faint of heart. Much different from our Farmers Markets. Loved the curries, seafood, and tropical fruit such as Dragon Fruit, Roseapple, and Phuket Pineapple.

I was pleasantly surprised by Hong Kong too, a beautiful intersection of East meets West. Hong Kong harbor is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. The shopping is simply incredible, and I couldn't get enough Dim Sum!

I definitely will be hosting "A Taste of Cajun/Creole Class" from the two very different cooking classes I took over on Algier Point, a 7 minute ferry ride from downtown New Orleans. I can't really say enough about New Orleans, I loved the food, music, architecture, and fun vibe.

Upcoming "Lunch in Provence" Dates

Overview and Details

Head to Domaine de Manion, and spend the day in Provence.  Experience a relaxing and enjoyable day of garden, vineyard, a multi-course cooking demonstration and lunch, as well as a chance to shop. 

For each culinary date, Bonnie creates a seasonal menu--using many of the prevalent flavors found in Provencal cuisine, and many of the ingredients grown from her own berry room, orchard, and potager. Recipes may be subject to slight changes based on availability.

Your day is generally 10:30am to 2pm. Cost for the day per person is $150.00. These events are limited to 10 participants. Sign up with a special friend, or loved one, and you receive $25.00 off one reservation. If you sign up at the same time, four or more reservations for an event, each person in your party will receive $25.00 off.  Your payment by check in advance, or credit card is your reservation. Please contact Bonnie to make your reservation and further details, at (760) 402-7600. No cancellation refunded within 72 hours of event day.

Thursday, May 12, 2016. Bonnie hosts and presents a "Luscious Lavender Lunch." A wonderful gift for a Mother's Day Celebration and/or an extra special treat with your friends. This seasonal springtime menu will have a hint of lavender in each course. Menu: Medjool Dates with Lavender Goat Cheese, Fruitful Salad with Lavender Candied Pecans & Pomegranate Dressing, Lavender Chicken Linguine with Avocado Cream Sauce, and Lavender Apple Rhubarb Crisp.

Thursday, June 23, 2016. Bonnie lovingly adapts and shares her "St. Remy, Provence Country Cooking Class" for all of you to enjoy and experience. Menu: Fresh Vegetable Provencal Soup, Tomato Tart with Onion Marmalade, Green Salad Vinaigrette, Strawberry Sorbet with Almond & Walnut Cookies. You don't have to travel to France, you can "Lunch in Provence" at Domaine de Manion.

It couldn't have been a prettier spring evening and setting for the April 13, 2106, "Field to Vase" Dinner Tour set in a row of friendly beautiful blooming ranunculus at the Carlsbad Flower Fields. There were 146 lucky attendees seated at one long table enjoying a magnificent appetizer to dessert feast, created and prepared by Chef Rossman of Terra Catering and the farm, Goodland Organics. Flower arrangements for the table were by two floral designing sisters, Casey and Kit, of Flower Duet. Many thanks to the host flower farmer, Mike Mellano and the Ecke family. 

Goodwill ambassadors, and some of the sponsors orchestrating this national "Field to Vase" Dinner Tour across the country were Certified American Grown, Slow Flowers, and California Cut Flower Commission, recognizing and supporting our great American flower farmers, as well as talented floral designers.

The setting, flowers, and food are spectacular, yet the bonus is the new and old friends you cross paths in one memorable evening. It was extra special to run into local flower farmer, Mel Resendiz, and fellow Miracle-Groer float rider at this year's 2016 Rose Parade.

It was exciting to be part of this year's San Francisco Flower & Garden Show, as a speaker and as a spectator on the last two days, Saturday March 19th and Sunday March 20th, 2016. Show organizers congregated over 100 speakers on 5 stages, coming from 11 states. The show this year touched on all aspects of gardening stemming from beauty, practical, artistic and inspiration--emphasizing the theme, "yours for the discovery."

Many of the show vendors this year were small creative entrepreneurs. One of my favorites was Lorina's Edible Garden with a spectacular corner booth of home-grown tomato seedlings, handmade spa lotions, gifts, and garden accessories.

My favorite "stand out" from the display gardens was a simple constructed arbor/bridge which also was a water feature. As you walked under the arbor you could see and hear the water trickling down each side. Very clever.

Avid Seattle Gardeners Travel to San Diego for Garden Tours

Down from Seattle for the San Diego Horticulture Society annual spring garden tour, the Northwest Horticultural Society had arranged to visit my garden the Friday before. What a nice group of gardeners who gleefully asked names of different zone plants they don't normally see. They finished their San Diego visit on Sunday with a guided tour of Balboa Park. I was glad that San Diego gave them a fabulous spring weekend for all of their garden touring.

I have been writing about my beloved Provence for years. One particular quote I wrote about Provence has profoundly resonated with others, and has been published in three books. Beautiful Provence photography by Rachel Hale McKenna, and 35 recipes by Chef Jean-Andre Charial who has held Michelin three stars for over 35 years and runs 7 restaurants in the South of France. This book is currently available on amazon, and/or my website at shop.

For the Love of Provence is more beautiful Provence photography by Rachel Hale McKenna, and illuminated text by Peter Mayle (A Year in Provence). This book is not available currently in the United States. You can find it through the Australian Publisher, Hardie Grant, and the South African Publisher, Quivertree.

The third book is a German edition of For the Love of Provence, available in Germany, by Herbig.
